Once they surrender the only thing we could do is to simply turn the water back on, restore the flow of food and other supplies, and allow the garbage trucks to start emptying the city of trash.

In Finland in 1918, they had a lot of enthusiastic but inexperienced volunteers who had yet to fully understand the realities of their new situation.

So they had them bayonet those prisoners for which there was no food or shelter, or who were deemed to be undeserving of such.

Some of the volunteers were as young as fourteen years of age, the last of their families to survive after the Red execution squads had finished. In the photo below, look very carefully, and you'll note the Iron Cross decorations the no-longer rookie youngsters were awarded while serving with the German 27th Jaeger Regiment. I don't think they got them for shining their boots real pretty.
