Either become a life member, or hold five consecutive annual memberships, and vote to change it.

Yes, it counts. I identify as an NRA member but had not paid the fee until about Feb or so. There have been multiple one or two year lapses over the last 20 years. Same with the American Legion.
Those renewal notices start coming a month after you pay again, so my first impulse is to ignore them.
Am I a member of both? Officially, yes, right now. Ask me in a year, and I might say yes, unofficially
