Looking for Health Insurance in NYS, Keep Getting Pointed to "The Marketplace"
6/27/18 | No one Special

Posted on 06/27/2018 10:13:34 AM PDT by CaptainPhilFan

Hi All. Here's the situation. Hubs and I live in NY. I am not working, and he was part of a mass lay off 3 weeks ago. We need health insurance. COBRA will cost $1100+ per month and that is not doable.

We looked into the much-fabled Medishare. To be a member you must profess faith and give them the name of your church. We have faith but no church. Some off-shoot, Aliera (?), isn't as strict, but kinda shady.

Any other insurance company points to the Marketplace, where we will not go because, without income we'll be shoved onto Medicaid with no other choice.

Does anyone have other information about buying private NYS health insurance, a real plan? A catastrophic plan? Do they really not exist anymore? I "knew" this, but it's so disgusting to put people like us in this kind of dilemma. Be forced into Medicaid against your will or go without health insurance

We'll do without if we have to, until we can find new employment, hopefully in another state. And pray for good health.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Possibility of USAA insurance? And yes, Obama basically did away with private insurance.

Tough situation.

Not many good options.

Anyone a veteran? Some professional societies have group health insurance.

You could always pay yourself the “$1100” to a separate account and then negotiate with doctors for a cash discount.

I am going through a similar thing.
It looks like my payments will go from $1062/mo under Cobra to $139/mo with medicare. I am over 65 though.
But check them out.

go to healthcare.gov

You should qualify for a special enrollment period. You should be able to pick from several plans and might qualify for a subsidy. You need to do this within 60 days of being laid off.

USAA: Our S-I-L is a Navy Vet, but I don’t think that gets us in.

That is a good idea, put away $$$$ for medical needs. We have a few Money Buckets already, one more won ‘t hurt. We have several thou in an HSA, too.

We’re still mid-50’s. Going on medicaid NOW might result in “Asset Recovery”, and we ain’t going there.

Thanks, but, we don’t want to go to healthcare.gov. We prefer to do this privately. We don’t want any subsidies. And with no income we will be forced into medicaid. And we ain’t going there.

USAA has opened up their system to people who have relatives who were or are in the military. It may be open to anyone, they have really opened it up. I have USAA insurance but my father was in the Army. You probably will get in without a problem.

1. Buy a time machine.

2. Go back 20 or 30 years.

3. Join the US Military.

4. Retire after 20 or 30 years.

5. Tricare for Life.

You can contact providers like Blue Cross in NY State, but you will pay list price/full premium

If you want any discounted plan or “subsidy” then you must go through Marketplace. Your income will then be verified by the insurance company, depending on your plan

You might be surprised. My step kids are eligible under my Navy service.

In NY, try Fidelis Care.
It’s an income-dependent “buy-in” for low income workers.

There are a number of Medishare like organizations and they require different affirmations. One or two will be compatible with just about any belief you have. Just about. I don’t think Satanism has its medishare yet but libertarianism does.

Thanks. I just went to Fidelis and entered fake names, but actual income, and it won’t let me even see options other than Medicaid. We have $$ to pay for a private plan, it seems we’re going to go without.

you have money to pay for private insurance, but you can’t afford Cobra?

You won’t even look at healthcare.gov?

You have no real religion?

Neither one of you willing to take a job for benefits?

And you’re a gambler who likes long odds because you won’t take unpleasant options?

Set up a GoFraudMe account.

Well, I gave in and started the process through the NYS Marketplace. It feels SO awful to have government involved in this process of MY personal health insurance.

I filled out all the info, and when it determined I was eligible for Medicaid it wouldn’t let me see any other plans, just said “Call this number”.

So I did, and Shakeera was confused because I didn’t want a subsidy or Medicaid, just to buy and pay for a plan.

She says I need to upload pics of our birth certificates, licenses and SS cards before I can proceed, but that might be in conflict with info on the site. etc.

Desperately looking for MY things now, I’ll keep you posted. :/
