I remember 60 years ago when Disney’s THE SWAMP FOX was on. The Canadians were having a fit because of all the anti-Tory talk in it as so many Tories left the soon-to-be USA and resettled in Canada.

Belvoir, the Fairfax family’s plantation next to Mt Vernon, was a casualty of the Revolution. George William Fairfax was in England and renting out the property when the war broke out, and being a Loyalist his property was confiscated. Ironically George Washington’s brother married Fairfax’s sister, Anne, and the young George Washington was a frequent visitor to Belvoir.

Swamp Fox, Swamp Fox tail on his hat
Nobody knows where the Swamp Fox is at.

That’s all I remember from the show.

I remember it as well, but was too young to understand the historical context. All I got out of it was the horses, swords, guns and the cool costumes and air of adventure. Of course, living very close to where the Swamp Fox operated, I learned all about him growing up.

By an interesting coincidence, however, I recently stumbled across some episodes of the show on Youtube.com. Imagine my surprise to see that the Swamp Fox was... hold on... Leslie Nielsen, aka Frank Drebin(Police Squad!; The Naked Gun)!
