As Amazon execs consider locations for HQ2, the Austin tech ecosystem has steadily been racking up major wins.
Indeed announced today that it will be launching massive recruitment initiatives of its own, with plans to add 3,000 local employees over the next few years across all departments. That news follows last month’s announcement from The Home Depot of 1,000 new hires at its Austin tech center.
“We are committed to growing in Austin, a city that is a proven tech hub with excellent access to talent and a community that encourages innovation,” said Indeed President Chris Hyams in a statement.
Founded in 2004, Indeed’s job searching and hiring tools have expanded significantly since its launch — as has its presence in Austin.
The company reported that it has quadrupled its total global employee count over the past three years.
Last year, Indeed had an estimated 1,400 local employees between its headquarters located downtown and near Pennybacker Bridge off Capital Texas Highway. Today, that number is closer to 1,600 in Austin, with north of 6,100 employees worldwide.
To accommodate its lofty hiring plans, Indeed is in the current development of two new offices, totaling over 615,000 square feet at The Domain and the top 10 floors at Block 71, on the corner of 6th and Lavaca streets.
The location off Capital Texas Highway will remain open once the new offices are ready for move in, and Indeed’s existing downtown location will be replaced by Block 71.
Indeed’s Austin offices house a majority of the company’s technical talent in engineering and product, as well as members from its finance, legal, sales, marketing, corporate development, client success and human resources teams.
I heard on the news that RTP, NC was high in the running as well...
So is Atlanta, DC, Dallas, LA and Boston.
I think Austin will lose out due to horrible traffic and little effective transit.
I imagine Dallas/Ft Worth has a better shot at it. They’ve lassoed several corporate headquarters recently.
I have this fear that Amazon will move to Austin and Austin will explode into the Chicago of Texas and drag the entire state down into a blue cesspool.
Anything can happen, but I doubt that that will. Chicago has natural geographic advantages that Austin will never have.

Nice to see Austin getting EVEN MORE well-paying jobs, even if Metrosexuals, but the BEST NEWS is watching all of the expansion NOT be in California. Next step, shutting down California operations - probably starting sooner than people think.
Lots are praying Austin doesn’t get Amazon’s HQ. Housing is ridiculous. No one can afford it. The traffic is ridiculous, too. Commuters are moving farther and farther out causing housing costs to skyrocket up to two hours away.

IMO, DFW has the advantage over Austin, very much so in terms of infrastructure: two major airports in Love and DFW, and the highways are good despite the continued population growth.
Austin is the only place it Texas I know of with enough brain dead liberals to accommodate a brain dead liberal company like amazon.
