Easy - and I’m sure that you know this: it is because of Nixon’s activities against Communists while he was in the House. That’s what got him picked by Ike as Veep and brought him to true national prominence. Then he went and beat Humphrey and bombed the living crap out of NV, and held Russia and China in check. Not good things from the standpoint of the Communist-sympathizing press and media.
