The politicians rely on and exploit voter ignorance, complacency, gullibility, and laziness. Sad but true.
I doubt that the Founders ever considered that the American people would be so passive.
And you are right, of course. The fact that so many corrupt and deceitful politicians remain in office is a reflection on the electorate.
