The writer peppers her piece with small put-downs of the country, pointing out the fact that some shops were closed and a waitress at a restaurant didn’t know whether a hamburger on the menu was “grass-fed” or not.

Only a coastal elite would ask such a rediculous question.
If a beef wasn’t raised in Iowa, Nebraska or the like, then it was grass-fed. So most cattle are grass-fed.
Well I don’t have the numbers, I would say that most beef are not grass-fed.
They may start out on grassland, but they are finished out in a feedlot.
Even here in Colorado.
I would have answered that question with,”No,they smoke it but they don’t eat it.”

I meant world-wide, not specifically the United States. I think a lot of ranchers elsewhere can’t afford the feedlot model. I prefer grain-fed beef but grass-fed is a trend among foodies.
