The millennial generation is taking a lot of heat lately, with even some of its members a bit shame-faced about their values, habits, and much else. Most troubling to the economically literate are surveys revealing millennials high level of comfort with socialism: at least one poll suggests a majority might prefer to live in a socialist or communist society. Since many in this age group are also OK with using physical force to silence those with whom they disagree, its not unreasonable to fret theyll transform America into something like Venezuela if given the chance.
But I spend my work days in the company of millennials, and Im less worried. A recent classroom discussion illustrates why. Read more....

Baby boomers sure do. Why would millennials be different. Gen X seems to be the only normal capitalistic moral ethical generation in America.
Admittedly I don’t know a lot of Xers, but all the ones I know are proudly and openly Bernie Babies, much to the chagrin of their Boomer parents who voted overwhelmingly for the president.
I will agree with your assessment of millennials.
How awful. Maybe cuz I am an older Xer, my peers may have grown up more. I just dont remember my generation matching protesting and all the other crap that millenials today and baby boomers in the 60s did.
Millennials have only known the 80 year progressive nanny-state, which is at its peak right now. If they love socialism, its because for their whole lives, they have been bathing in socialism, and its propaganda, funded for decades by massive American debt and printed money.
They have no context or perspective to know how a different political, government, economic structure might work.
This Gen Xer (born 1979) grew up during the age of Reagan, and is a proud Trump supporter. Socialism sucks. The filthy hippies, and millenials should get a job, and live within their means.
Good article, great object lesson.
Excellent lesson taught by this professor. I heard a version of this a few years ago.
A Republican dad suggested a grading scale like this to his liberal college student daughter who got good grades. She immediately protested this saying she had studied and worked hard for her grades while she knew some of her classmates screwed around, didn’t go to class, got drunk and came to class hungover if at all and that it was “unfair” that her grades should suffer to boost the grades of slackers like this.
Her dad just smiled and said “Welcome to the Republican party.....”
Nice wide brush.
One f the great misconceptions in American history us that Boomers were the protestors of the 60’s. Since Boomers were born between 1947-63 during the period of 1967-70, the heaviest period of protest and violence, most boomers were in HS or younger, not on college campuses. The leaders of the SDS, Weather Underground, Black Panthers, the protests in Chicago in 1968 were in the mid twenties or older. Not by definition Boomers. We were not perfect, but we are not the pot smoking, commie loving, free love caricature that Hollywood has portrayed us as being for years. I graduated from HS in 1969 at age 17 and had never heard of Woodstock, supposedly the defining event of my generation, until the movie came out. We were not Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. That would be our older cousins who are all now in the late 70’s or early 80’s.
We were called slackers partially because we didn’t run around screaming about everything.
Like Nirvana’s song said: Whatever, nevermind.
Perhaps the Millennials will have to nearly destroy America before they wake up to fighting to restore it. Like they say; you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it think.
Like most people they like being given $$$ but don’t like paying taxes.
But most know little about US or world history, the constitution or even how laws are passed.
They get their information from the Comedy channel or network TV late night shows.
It looks that way. Products of the now Marxist educational system, it would be surprising if they were not to the left of earlier generations. Socialism used to get an automatic rejection from most Americans. But kinder, gentler Communism seems to be in the works. The only people at the barricades now wear dentures.
That’s about right. The bulk of the movement was my peers, born during or just before WWII, not the boomers. The sixties were like the twenties. A blast.
Before grade inflation took over the average grade was supposed to be C. The idea behind grade inflation is to artificially boost student self esteem because it is highly correlated with success. Unfortunately correlation is not causation. People are not successful because of high self esteem but develop high self esteem because of success.
The ugly side of unearned self esteem is it does not lead to a healthy spirit of competition but to an evil spirit of envy. Envy seeks to destroy the success of others, and to the delight of government schools: vote Democrat.
Hayden 76, Ayers 73, Dohrn 76, Rubin would be 80, Hoffman would be 82, Huey Newton would be 76. Not a Boomer in the bunch. I rest my case.
