“The mere presence of troops in a country that has invited them in is not in itself a justification for a deadly response.
It is not proper to bomb either Russians or Iranians in Syria except upon the request of the Syrian government.”
Given that Syria remains in a state of war with Israel, and has attempted to obliterate the Jewish state on multiple separate occasions, in addition to harboring and sponsoring a smorgasbord of terrorist movements against Israel, anything Israel does against Syria’s government, including the assassination of its rulers, is justified. We toppled Afghanistan’s government for harboring al Qaeda terrorists and have occupied the country. Syria has sponsored terrorists that have killed more Israelis on a per capita basis by an order of magnitude as compared to our losses on 9/11. Note that Afghanistan never posed any threat of erasing the US from the map, whereas Syria has, on multiple occasions, posed an existential threat to Israel. What would we do to an Afghanistan that not only inflicted 9/11-scale casualties on US, but was also located next door and kept lobbing missiles over the border at us? Nothing quite as restrained as what Israel is doing today.

Assad has terrorist enemies that are his priority at this time.
