When I was a teenager in the early 60s, I got 75 cents a week. Probably equivalent to about $6.00 now. I guarantee that I earned it.

Of course they didn’t have to give me anything.

I washed dishes at elementary school in exchange for a meal, mowed the lawn, picked weeds, fed and cleaned-up after the dogs and other chores as needed. Didn’t get an allowance.

My dad bought a Holstein calf at the stock market and a bag of milk replacer at the feed store.
When I sold it as a yearling I had to repay him the cost of the calf and feed.
I had enough left over to buy two more calves and milk replacer.
When I sold those two as yearlings I turned a profit.
They taught me the value of pennies early.

“Of course they didn’t have to give me anything.”
