Not good for full-size 1911s?

Oh, sure, they do just fine, it's just that a lot of people prefer +P ammo for self-defense. Personally I'm not sure it makes all that much difference, but out of a longer barrel you have better muzzle velocity optimization, or so in theory. I do a lot better with a follow-up shot in a subcompact with standard pressure ammo - less muzzle flip - and most self-defense shooters don't have to worry about barrier penetration as LEOs do. Just my $0.02 and I'm sure a lot of people disagree.

I first handled a 1911 in 1963 in JROTC. I never fired anything but issue ammunition until around 2008. My (middle) son, SIL, and I have endless discussions about the best carry ammunition, but never reach any final conclusion.

I just use whatever my son brings home. I have faith in the 1911. If I put one on target when appropriate, quickly enough, I should be good regardless of the type of ammunition.
