I agree troops should not be used for routine law enforcement. . However one million people crossing the border each year into this country is a little more than a routine law enforcement issue. Not to mention the 20-30 million illegal occupants currently in the country who have no intention of leaving. An invasion by millions of people is an example of a problem too big for local, federal, and state law enforcement to address alone. The impotence of law enforcement is demonstrated by the trainloads of people who cross through Mexico from Central America and then cross the border. Troops stationed at the border to keep invaders from crossing the border would discourage future invaders from making the trip, not to mention the Mexican authorities from allowing the invaders to pass through Mexican territory. If we aren’t going to use our troops to protect the homeland from invasion, why even have an army?
Stationing troops along the border while the wall is being built, to stop the invading hordes and criminal gangs, would seem to be appropriate for a temporary “national emergency”. Looking back on US history it was the US Army that repelled British troops in the War of 1812, that pursued the native Americans raiding settlements in the Indian Wars of the 1820’s and the Plains wars in the second half of the 19th century, the Confederate rebels from 1861-1865, occupied the southern states from 1865-1877, and pursued Pancho Villa through the southwest in the early 1900’s, not law enforcement. In 1967 and 1968 US army troops were sent to help local law enforcement and the National Guard suppress rioting in Detroit and Washington DC. Sometimes local law enforcement, and federal law enforcement agencies just aren’t up to the task.
