I can’t imagine the battle being fought in these sub zero temps.

I can’t imagine fighting this battle knowing there was only one road in or out of Chosin.

God Bless our soldiers, God Bless, Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah to those who have fought in our wars to protect our freedoms.

Nice work PBS this time around spending tax payer dollars to tell a true story of the heroics of young American kids fighting for their lives so I can give thanks for them today.

Read The Frozen Hours early this year. Novel by Jeff Shaara which dealt with the Chosin campaign. I highly recommend it.

My uncle received a battlefield commission on Guadalcanal, survived Saipan, walked out of Chosin with what remained of his company, and retired as a full bird colonel.

He was one of the most amazing men I have ever met. I never got the stories of what my uncles did until after they were dead. Damn shame.

Task Force Faith, a scratch force of Army personnel scrounged up from a motley collection of units, probably kept the Marines from being outflanked. That was an epic stand reminiscent of the 300 at Thermopylae. Of course, the price paid by TFF was horrendous, with 90+% casualties (killed, wounded, MIA and captured).

Our family had two there. Both made it out.

Col. Cal Rhodes: You know, for years, I couldn’t sleep after Korea. My nightmares all had to do with the Chosin Reservoir. The ground there was so frozen, we couldn’t bury our dead. We had to pile ‘em on trucks and lash them up against the tanks. For years I’d wake up with those dead, frozen faces staring at me.

Wilkes: Did it ever go away?

Col. Cal Rhodes: No... I finally made friends with them, though.

As someone else mentioned, don't forget about Task Force Faith.

They were on the eastern side of the reservoir, a product of LTG Ned Almond's insistence on dividing forces. IIRC, they were the 31st Infantry Regiment. Their colors repose in a museum in Bejing today, I think.

Those Army troops suffered every bit as much as the Marines -- but in part because of their losses, the full story took decades to emerge. Even the Army didn't want to complete the official history of their struggle. It came out as the book "East of Chosin", IIRC.

F-I-L, USMC (ret.) was there.

It stayed with him for the rest of his life.
