Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran wants Congress to stop doling out payments for sexual harassment settlements, payouts that have come to light as the issue has come into greater national focus.
He sent a letter Monday to House Speaker Paul Ryan after numerous media reports about the Office of Compliance releasing information that it has paid $17 million since 1997 from a fund it manages. Those settlements, however, cover multiple types of workplace misconduct settlements, and specific data covering the cost of resolving sexual harassment complaints are not publicly available.
I ask you to please bring a swift end to this perverse hush fund it is not only the right thing to do, but it is also a needed step towards regaining the trust of the taxpayer, Corcoran wrote.
Corcoran acknowledged that Florida is not without fault. POLITICO has reported in the past month that then-incoming Senate Democratic leader Jeff Clemens had an affair with a lobbyist (he resigned), that Florida Democratic Party Chairman Stephen Bittel had a history of demeaning women (he resigned),

THIS JUST IN: Female visitors to Capitol Hill are being advised to bring a can of pepper spray....to protect themselves from elected Democrat predators.
TIP OF THE ICEBERG
<><>Accused Democrat predator, John Conyers, is a founding member of The Black Congressional Caucus-—God knows what thievery and crimes lurk behind those closed doors. Black Caucus members get an EXTRA 10,000 each in addition to the tax dollars extorted to run this braid dead caucus,
Conyers history of shady doings in office is deplorable....and long. How often does this happen with our tax dollars?
<><>In 2016, his then-COS Cynthia Martin pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property after she refused to reimburse $16,500 that was mistakenly deposited in her account.......the Office of Congressional Ethics found Conyers continued to pay Martin more than $13,000 per month when she was supposedly on unpaid leave.
<><> In 2006, two former aides complained that Conyers made them babysit his children, run errands, and work on his reelection campaign while drawing their congressional salaries.
<><>There was also a bizarre incident in 2005 when 60 Thanksgiving turkeys, given to his staff to disperse to people, may have gone missing.
<><> Conyers wife, former Detroit city councilor Monica Conyers, was sentenced to three years in prison over bribery charges in 2010.
<><> While his wife was in jail, observers say they saw Conyers accompanied by a succession of young woman back home.
Holy excrement!
Agree. Any settlements should come out of members budgets with full accountability and no confidentiality agreements.
Just publish the names of those whom the settlements were payed for and it will stop immediately. Until they figure out how to get the lobbyists to pick it up.
I don't think public funds should be used in these settlements at all. Congressmen should have to pay for private insurance to cover these types of claims which are made against them personally.

Utterly unacceptable behavior on the part of Congress in so many ways. They get to sexually molest people and then “settle up” using OUR money? Seriously?! WTF?!!!!
The name of every single one of these scumbags who “settled” should be made public, as well as the charges against them. If guilty, they should be kicked out of our government and ALL of them who agreed to “settle” on our dime should be forced to pay back every cent of it to we-the-people.
Of course, hell will freeze over first.
Publish the names... and send them the bill.
Good. Taxpayers should not have to fund bad behavior.
Shutting down the fund is a good start. Identifying all parties involved in the settlements followed by reimbursements to the taxpayers is the next thing that should happen.
Did that come out of the military funds, also? Or just social security?

If true, talk about a Deep State.
Better get your mukluks ready.
Who would have thought that the tax payer is shelling out money to cover up our elected representatives legal bills and settlements for sexual crimes? Disgusting, these folks need to be booted out of office ASAP and anyone involved in keeping this from the public needs to go as well. Bring in a special prosecutor too, and imprison the masterminds of this sick plot.
I don’t want it shut down, I want it opened up. I want all the details published so we can see all the dirty laundry on both sides of the aisle.

The regular federal workforce enjoys the same game. Same structures. And it is billions, not millions.
Other than leaks or third party testimonials, settlements almost always have a non-disclosure clause. That's why the perp settles and doesn't go to court. Think Michael Jackson.
And that's why we should be thankful for WikiLeaks.

Big deal. This slush fund is likely the least of it.
I’m betting campaign funds and money from people looking to buy info and/or votes has also been used.
Here’s an idea: Ask and demand an answer to this question from every Rep and Sen: Have you ever been party to a non-disclosure agreement.
If the pol says yes or refuses to answer, guess who gets grilled...
