Some say it is a referendum on Trump, and that is indeed why Northam won.
Some are full of Bullshit. Va. Has been a solid lib state for years. The fact that the GOP did so well shows their gaining strength in lib land.
We have to stop immigration. We have to send as many as we can back home. We have been swamped.
Fairfax County... wins the elections. The rest of the state has the house of delegates to perform and manage a semblance of pragmatism.
The future of America is California.
Bankrupt welfare state ruled by a very thin, very rich Neo-Marxist ruling class and populated by a vast majority of low-income-to-poor non-whites and illegal/legal immigrants.
Get used to it.
Yep, add in the felon vote to lock it in.
These people do not vote to improve the future, just to get their own selves “cared” for.
Gillespie clearly did not appeal to Republican base in suburban/exurban areas. In my county (Stafford), which is reliably Repub. and a DC exurb, he received only 52% of vote. Should have been more like 60%. Gillespie also underperformed in Prince William Co., getting only 38%. With the right candidate, this county is competitive for Repubs.
Good analysis.
I was born in Virginia with ancestors going back since before there was a United States.
There is, for now, no more ‘Virginia’. There is in its place a sprawling, expanding ‘Northern Virginia’ which is characterized by those whose livelihoods depend on federal government. Northern Virginia (NOVA) is a symptom of metastatic government growth.
Virginia will rise from the ashes when the federal government starts cutting back towards its pre-LBJ size or alternatively, and preferably when the private sector grows while the public sector stagnates to a ratio that approaches the pre-LBJ era.
When all the ‘government’ dependent businesses and individuals of the DC Metro region see that life is not only good but better in the private sector, then the shift from a fading ‘Virginia’ to a metastatic ‘NOVA’ will start reversing. At some point in that process, democrat candidates will fall out of favor. The challenge is for the GOP or a robust third party to fill the gap.
If that were true, then Hillary would have been elected POTUS one year ago.
Just like Cook County in Illinois. Virginia has chosen to follow Illinois down the drain. Let's see if it works out better for Virginia than it did for Illinois.
That’s what it looked like to me; McAuliffe’s dirty tactic in that vein producing its poisonous fruit.
“Bankrupt welfare state ruled by a very thin, very rich Neo-Marxist ruling class and populated by a vast majority of low-income-to-poor non-whites and illegal/legal immigrants.”
Phil Murphy won big in New Jersey. He promised to make New Jersey a sanctuary state!
The Virginia GOP chose to put Ed Gillespie at the top of the statewide ticket. Ed was a candidate of the establishment, by the establishment and for the establishment. If the GOP has a future it is as a nationalist, populist, pro liberty party. Rather than seeing this election as a victory for progressive, antiTrump forces, it might be better seen as a death spasm for the hated GOPe. Remember that Gillespie (and by default all other GOP candidates) refused to accept open personal support from Trump. If I remember correctly, Gillespie declined to have Trump campaign for him.
Then there is the fatigue factor- do they not realize how sick and tired people are of Karl Rove, the Bushes, and McCain? Just damn!
Gillespie was a seriously flawed candidate in many respects, not the least of which were he was a consummate GOP-e insider/RINO squish/Never Trumper. As soon as he secured the nomination, I knew the election was lost.
IMHO, the “Gillespie has a shot” narrative of the last several weeks was purely a media psyops campaign designed to dispirit conservatives and allow the “It’s all over for Trump” meme to be pushed forward.
You nailed it.
Oooh I'm sorry, I forgot. Illegal votes don't exist in the US and democraps are known to never cheat when it comes to elections. /s
It’s not just Northam vs Gillespie, Dem also picked up seats in legislative house. [I don’t know if they flip the house or not.] So last night is not JUST the northern tip of VA that has been blue and turning bluer.
Is this the typical opposition party gaining power during first year of a sitting president? Or is this ‘a wave’ for 2018 mid-term?
