How is North Korea paying for this?
Last year, I went to South Korea. On one of my tours there, the tour guide talked a lot about a TV show that features defectors from NK. One of the defectors featured had asked if it was legal for him to purchase an apartment in Seoul. Sure, the SK government told him, if he could pay for it. So he paid for the $2 million apartment in cash.
While the majority of North Koreans are destitute, the elite class gets luxury. Of course, that chasm between rich and poor is a feature of communism and other dictatorships everywhere. What the above story illustrates, however, is that even the privileged Norks have reasons to flee. I’m guessing that the threat of getting on Kim Jong Eun’s bad side, with resulting execution, does not always outweigh the perks of being a member of the privileged class.
