When I was a kid in the 50s just about every comic book had ads for full auto BB guns. Also X-ray eye glasses etc.

I always wondered if any of it worked.

I wasted my allowance on that one, and others

One I didn't fall for was the "Make a ghost" which consisted of a balloon you had to fill with helium and the drape the 6"x6" sheet white of white fabric over it - Voila!"

I bought a “full size real semi auto firing .22 cal broomhandle mauser” for something like $5 when I was about 8.

When it arrived I knew right away that there would be no big game hunts with Pa, no communist hoards cowering under my assault. Imagine my disappointment when I realized it was exactly as described but something less than I envisioned. Navy blue plastic, yellow plastic grips. It was chambered in .22...plastic pellets. It was semi auto, at least until the second day when the trigger jammed down.
