Just for discussion sake, it’s often not permitted to harvest more than one deer at a time. Is it considered an ethical shot to fire on a deer with another directly behind it?

Well if they’re in your garden gnawing on your rutabagas, I say kill them all.

And let Bambi sort them out.

It’s illegal to harvest more than what you’re licensed for and if you don’t know your target or what’s behind it, you shouldn’t be hunting. Especially with a rifle. I know arrows can pass through cleanly too.
