Suppose he is an arms trader (guns for drugs, to cartels).

That would explain the large sums of money and his airplanes. And his almost invisible public profile.

Suppose he sometimes meets his customers in Las Vegas hotels. (And if you want to launder large sums of cash, Vegas is the place to do it.)

Suppose the government pressured him into cooperating (against cartels, radical groups, etc); and whoever were his customers this time
turned the sting around?

That would also explain the demand that the LV police not enter the room, but wait for the SWAT team — who would clean up any evidence that they had been “stung”?
