I should help this guy promote himself?
It depends on the goal you’re trying to accomplish. If you’re trying to encourage private bloggers to post their entire articles here, then having you (or anyone else) post the rest of their content immediately after they post an excerpt serves the purpose. They won’t get the site hits, and we still get to read the content (and maybe if we like what we read we’ll browse to their site to see more). If their stuff is always posted in full here within moments of them posting the excerpted version, eventually they’ll give up and just post the entire articles themselves.
If on the other hand, your goal is to drive independents away by giving them a hard time and generally acting unfriendly, then reprimanding them and not bringing over their content is the way to go. And then we’re all potentially poorer because the independents will eventually stop trying to post anything here.
I should add that I actually have nothing against pushing bloggers to post their entire article; I’ve done so myself. Unless a site has specifically required FR to excerpt (or bare-link) their articles, then the whole thing should be posted here so we don’t have to go haring off across the internet to get the whole thing. If the article is good, people will be attracted to the writer’s site based on their quality, they’ll get more hits, and they’ll have more reason to come back to us. If they suck, then their writing will attract few comments, some overripe tomatoes, and will sink without a trace. It might be a slightly slower process, but we’ll win more friends in the end. I would think that, since FR depends on donations to stay running, we would want to avoid doing things that might drive away new potential donors.
