I keep a 1911 in a shoulder holster cocked and locked because the strap comes between the hammer and firing pin. I feel perfectly comfortable with that arrangement.

On the hip, I don’t because, as you said, I keep checking the strap.

For hip use, I prefer the Beretta 96 in .40 because it has both a manual safety and a 12 pound DA trigger. For bear country I keep a S&W 329 44 mag on the left hip. Great revolver and same thing, 12 pound trigger.

What holster do you use?

I moved to black bear country a few years ago and bought my one and only Glock in 10mm. I have an N frame revolver but it is to heavy to schlep up a mountain thus the new gun.
I have a nice holster and my finger has never touched the trigger on the Glock without me meaning too.

Another bonus is that I also put a holster in a fanny pack so when I hike in more liberal areas I have some protection without giving locals the vapors. It was a little difficult hiding the wheel gun.

My city carry is an LC9 in a pocket holster or ITWB holster with one in the tube and safety on, I don’t always pay attention to the experts either. I do make sure to hit the range and practice drawing and flipping the safety off over and over. My one and only time drawing the 1911, I had no conscious thought of flipping the safety off but heard it click as I drew so I’m confident if I keep up with my practice the safety on the LC9 won’t be an issue.
