Apple has announced it is planning to build two new data centers in Waukee, Iowa.
Reuters reported that the two new data centers "will create hundreds of jobs for people in Iowa from construction to engineering," Apple CEO Tim Cook said, although it was left unclear how many of those jobs will remain once the data center is actually built.
The new facility will set Apple back $1.375 billion, although $207.8 million will be received in incentives approved by the Iowa Economic Development Authority and Waukee city council.
The company will buy 8.09 square km of land in Waukee, some 30 kilometres west of Des Moines, and will get $19.65 million investment tax credit for creating 50 jobs.
Tim Cook also said Apple will contribute up to $100 million towards a "public improvement fund" for Waukee.
"This new data center will play a very important role in the App Stores continued success," Cook said. "As the App Store grows, we look forward to growing in Iowa."
According to Reuters, $110 million will be needed to purchase and prepare the land, while $620 million will be used for construction. Another $600 million will be spent on computer equipment, and $45 million on "other equipment."
Apple is now joining Facebook and Google in operating data centers in Iowa.
(Not that I'm not happy about job creation. But I hope they hire citizens instead of H-1Bs.)
Unless this is a Brit publication, I hate it when writer metrics. They (the progs and government) tried shoving that down our throat around Jimma Carter’s time, and it didn’t work.
Anyone spouting metrics is just being pretentious.
* a writer uses metrics.......
Kuala Lumper, I believe.
Looks like it’s from Reston, VA.
Microsoft, Facebook and LightEdge already have new data centers in the Des Moines metro area. The area’s biggest employers are insurance and banking, so there’s lots of electronic infrastructure.
Call centers, nice. While manufacturing stays outside of the US?
UGH! Haven’t had my coffee yet. Just noticed that they’re DATA centers, not call centers. Sigh...
Do you think that worker’s family cares how he pays for the rent, groceries, utilities, clothing and transportation? I doubt that Apple pays minimum wage. I’ve worked at a call center before and in jobs that were similar. They paid me money for a day’s work. Is call center work beneath Americans somehow?
Did you miss the big Foxconn/Wisconsin story? Foxconn is the manufacturer of many of Apple’s products.
Waukee is a booming upscale residential suburb of Des Moines. Data centers bring surprisingly few jobs, which is probably appreciated by area residents. Their commute is relatively difficult (for Des Moines) as it is.
And the nattering nabobs of negativism here in the Waukee area are in overdrive with their criticism.
They think tax abatement’s given to Apple mean the government is actually writing Apple a check.
This is great news. This data center is only the beginning for Apple here.
Microsoft and Facebook have/are building huge facilities as well.
They don’t have a huge amount of permanent jobs; but 100s of people work to build them.
Waukee also has some of the best biscuits and gravy in Iowa!!!
Where?
I’m in WDM.
