I fiddled with the text some to get all the footnotes at the end of the letter. In the original article, they were sprinkled throughout.

What a stupid idea. I used the existing trails for years. Why put a Trail with families and kids next to the highway with separation?!

“I-66 HOT Lanes Shared Use Trail Objections”
What the hell is that supposed to mean? it’s nothing but words placed one after another with no regard to meaning.

Cars and bikes don’t mix.

I bike. I do not bike on busy streets. I bike on sidewalks. I bike on trails specially designed for bikes without motorized vehicles.

The idea that getting on and off of the highway biking trail would somehow be safe is incomprehensible.

A distracted driver "accidentally" hitting a biker while texting?

This is so beyond stupid.

I don’t think it’s inherently absurd to put bike lanes parallel to a shoulder. (The picture is misleading, as it makes it look as if the bike lanes will be IN the shoulder.) The Custis trail along I-66 is a good example, within Arlington, and it’s actually a LOT more pleasant than you might expect. (It’s on the OUTSIDE of the noise barriers.)

The odd thing about this proposal is that there already IS a bike path the portion of I-66 which is inside the beltway. The Washington and Old Dominion trail extends northwest roughly following the Dulles Access toll road, rather than west along I-66. In Arlington, it turns southeast, but branches off to form the Custis Trail.

As far as I’m concerned, once you have to rebuild all the bridges, you might as well spend one or two percent more and build a very wide, all-purpose highway.
