Every year, thousands of Indian farmers commit suicide. Now one researcher thinks it may have something to do with climate change.
Tamma Carleton, a researcher at the University of California at Berkeley, compared almost five decades worth of suicide and climate data and concluded that temperature variations in India may have a strong influence on suicide rates during the growing season.
In her study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, Carleton estimates that more than 59,000 farmer suicides over the past 30 years can be linked to global warming.
Carletons findings are particularly worrisome and come just two months after the Trump administration pulled out of the Paris climate accord, which was adopted by 196 countries, including the United States under the Obama administration in December 2015. ...... After President Trump pulled out of the accord, many countries, including India and China, said they would continue to honor their commitments under the accord.

According to the World Health Organization, India accounts for the highest number of suicides in the world. A staggering 133,623 people took their own lives in 2015, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau. More than 12,000 of those were farmers and agricultural laborers, almost one-tenth of the total.

Too bad Tamma isn’t a farmer, but that would mean producing something worthwhile.
Seems to me that a few years ago I saw a video alleging that Monsanto’s practices concerning their seeds caused a lot of farmers in India to go bankrupt and commit suicide. These liberals never give up.
Yes, but altering the DNA of plants is ALSO CAUSED BY GLOBAL WARMING. Monsantos scientist stayed out in the sun too long and their brains got cooked causing them to make ‘mistakes’... so it all goes back to global warming after all...
It’s the India made Pesticides or Fake Pesticides made them insane
All this Global Warming bull is just plugging Algore’s new movie
The Indian farmer suicides got off to a big start when they had to buy their seeds from merciless Monsanto. Been going on for years, if not decades. Poor farmers could NOT AFFORD Monsanto seeds and were prosecuted if they saved their own seeds. When you have virtually nothing to begin with, and your family is starving before your eyes....suicide seems the only way for these men.
Monsanto does this to American farmers too. One brave Canadian farmer with huge acreage was able to defeat them in court because he could afford a million bucks to fight back . Documented, and on youtube prior to election cycle of 2008 or 2012,
That said, climate may be contributing to suicides too.
You have better eyes.
In reading the article, I missed the part that said “50% of Indias population are farmers”. Now that you put it that way, it (climate change) is indeed a positive thing for Indian farmers.
Liberal elites don't take kindly to people who speak the truth...
I go to India at least 3 times a year and was born. the reason for suicides was always there was abumpr crop and this resulted in lower agricultural price and some of these farmers had borrowed mney for other purposes liek marraige of dayghters etc’

Your words ring with truth... totally logical... totally within the human response to stress and hope, fear and disappointment. Thanks for sharing.
In other words, the connection to Global Warming/Climate Change is most certainly nil.
And the UC-Berkeley person’s only able to get the funding for her ‘study’ because of bogus claims.
So basically 1500 a year over a population of 1 billion. More fake news from the fear mongers.
That's my take ...
How many suicides that took place in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, etc during the 1930’s could be directly attributed to the Dust Bowl? Maybe the revisionists who teach what’s laughingly called American History should rewrite The Grapes of Wrath. Imagine if Tom Joad decided to end it all and laid down in front of the bulldozer that levelled his house instead of packing up the family and travelled on route 66 to California.
