Chicago's O'Hare Field 1945 to today

In 1956, O'hare had 36,762 takeoffs and landings, or about 100 a day.
Today, it has 867,635 a year. About 2400 a day.

Compare a 50's era aircraft to today's jet engine.


Twin enging planes require about 30 seconds a full thrust to take off. The jumbos require about 60 seconds.

All that super heated air has an effect.
Add to that the heat sink of all the concrete and asphalt.
