Journalists were gobsmacked to discover that Trump tweeted an animated GIF of him from his wrestling days knocking out someone with the CNN logo superimposed over his head. Among the scandalized were the targets of the tweet CNN itself.
And so, CNN did what any reasonable, sensible, and journalistic operation would do: they sought out the person who originally made the GIF on Reddit.

Reddit userHanA**holeSolo first shared the GIF last Wednesday of Trump pummeling a wrestler with CNNs logo imposed on his face. CNN could find no earlier instance of the GIF. The GIF was later edited into a video with sound and tweeted by the President on Sunday.
On Reddit, HanA**holeSolo took credit for inspiring the tweet. Soon after, HanA**holeSolos other posts on Reddit, some of which included racist and anti-Semitic imagery, quickly circulated on social media.
Oh good. Glad to know CNN is pursuing the most important news of the day.
Why on EARTH is this a story that needed to be told? Are we going to seek out the creators of every meme, Photoshop, and video posted by every politician now? Or just the ones we disagree with? Or just Trump? How is this going to work? If something contains a news organizations logo, is it the responsibility of that organization to seek out the maker of the file?
This is an absolutely absurd piece of journalism the type of thing Id expect a blogger with an ideological vendetta to pull. Not something CNN attaches its name to or, at least something I wouldnt have expected of them prior to 2017.
But, the title of this post mentions VENGEANCE! and this is what made me think some of that was involved:
After posting his apology, HanA**holeSolo called CNNs KFile and confirmed his identity. In the interview, HanA**holeSolo sounded nervous about his identity being revealed and asked to not be named out of fear for his personal safety and for the public embarrassment it would bring to him and his family.
CNN is not publishing HanA**holeSolos name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.
CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.
That last line (emphasis mine) seems a whole lot like a threat, doesnt it? Maybe its not meant to be, but at the same time, it sounds an awful lot like a warning shot. Hey, you do this again, and were blowing the whistle.
This is just stupid, and it does absolutely nothing for CNN. People who hate Trump will be happy one of his supporters got put in his/her place. People who love Trump will see this as an attempt by a biased media to fight back against Trump.
Its like these people have never dealt with the Internet before. People make things stupid things and lots of them on the Internet all the time. Its not journalism to find out who these people are. Its dumb.
UPDATE: For what its worth, both Andrew Kaczynski (who wrote the story) and the Reddit user say that there is no threat, implied or otherwise.

This thing is getting some wind behind it!!

Don Jr. tweeted about this already.
CNNBlackMail is number one trend on twitter.
They threatened this poster - to ‘out’ him, his family, and possibly cost him his job or lead to death threats from the nutty leftists.
This was a private citizen posting a joke video that Trump happened to laugh at and share.
This could happen to any member of Free Republic tomorrow.
Shocked some here think this is press freedom when it’s clearly the intimidation and threatening of a private person who happens to post online.
Word is on 4 chan that the poster was a 15 year old kid.
This story is still front and center on their website...
cnn.com
They are using it to intimidate people.
Saw the exposing of the lie about the story.
They likely called and left a message and the (supposedly 15 year old kid) Redditor didn’t know what to do. He went online and deleted everything he posted on that ID and posted an apology.
He then spoke to CNN apologizing more. CNN, finding out it was a minor, agreed not to publish the name.
But a 4chan person already located the kid and he will likely be ‘outed’ because of this at some point.
Note also that Time Warner owns CNN and Reddit. They likely tracked him down from his IP address used on Reddit. They then created the ‘we found him out through his posts’ as a cover story because what they did might violate RICO.
Breitbart calls a spade a spade:
CNN Blackmails Source of Donald Trump Wrestling Video
Is CNN guilty of blackmail against the Reddit user who created the viral GIF of Donald Trump attacking a mock CNN reporter?
Julian Assange @JulianAssange
A multi-billion dollar TV network blackmailing a private citizen into not making funny videos about it is not journalism, CNN. #CNNBlackmail
CNN is not different than ISIS or North Korea. Threaten people for making memes. Pure evil.
BTW, since I’m slightly intoxicated I’d like to thank 2ndDivisionVet for the enormous amount of content he posts on FR. He is truly awesome.
Happy independence day patriots!
Tonight US Representative Scott Taylor accused CNN of coercion and blackmail!
Republican Scott Taylor is a former Navy SEAL.
@CNN U basically coerce apology & threaten release of identity if something changes? Pretty sure a line is crossed here. #CNNBlackmail https://t.co/k4W9AepP6W

The answer is for the kid to disarm the blackmail by saying he did it. And it’s up to us to fight in his behalf.
Cernovich is THE news!
“Id like to thank 2ndDivisionVet for the enormous amount of content he posts on FR”
Yup...I don’t know where he gets all the info on new companies and the jobs they will create, but it’s like watching Fox Business.
