Currently very popular among athletes - including pro athletes - for fat loss. It is counter intuitive but it works.

Very promising for correcting liver and bile function.

I would not recommend it for more than 3 or so days a week as carbohydrates are needed for healthy brain function - especially for women.

I can get into a ketogenic state quickly so I only follow it half of each day.

Requirement for dietary carbohydrate is zero.
Body and brain run best on ketones with a small amount of glucose which is derived intrinsically.

Ketogenic diets are designed to control insulin. You won’t be able to burn any or much stored fat in the presence of high insulin. Dr. Joseph Kraft designed the 4-hr insulin assay and found 75% of adults are diabetic (abnormal insulin response) even if fasting blood sugar is ok.

Chronically high insulin and insulin resistance is associated with most chronic diseases including cancer and heart disease.

Controlling insulin is best using high fat low carb diet along with intermittent fasting. See Drs. Jason Fung, Jeff Volek, Tim Noakes, Dom D’Agostino etc.

Original Atkins was too high in protein (some insulin response) and “bad” fats.

If you want a long term version of it then you can eat as much carbs as you need to make up for whatever hard or intense exercise you do during the week, and you have to empty your liver with a long run once a week (1.5-2 hours, no eating before or during). You feel like a million bucks AND you can eat all the ice cream you want :)

Actually, that’s not true. You cant really cut your carbs to less than about 50 grams a day, and that’s plenty for the brain.
