SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - A "cyanide bomb" planted by U.S. predator-control agents targeting coyotes near homes and hiking trails in Idaho exploded when a boy handled the device, injuring him and killing his dog, authorities and relatives said on Friday.

Canyon Mansfield, 14, was playing with his yellow Labrador retriever, Casey, on Thursday afternoon near his home east of Pocatello when he saw what he thought was a sprinkler head on the ground and touched the device, causing it to detonate.

The explosion sprayed the boy and his 3-year-old, 90-pound (40 kg) pet with toxic cyanide gas, according to the boy's mother, Theresa Mansfield.

“Canyon said there was a bang like a bomb, then an explosion of an orange substance that covered him and Casey, who was writhing in pain on the ground before he died right in front of Canyon,” she said.

Imagine the reaction if a private individual planted a cyanide bomb, as a chemical land mine, in an effort to control predators, and a child was injured by it.

Every government bureaucrat involved should face the same consequences a private individual would face.

The coyote angle was just the cover story for first article testing. My perfectly rational reasoning tells me that a ping from the right cell phone will set it off to kill the right target.

They used to be used commonly thought they were outlawed years ago.

Interesting if it was a newly manufactured one.

""These devices are only set at the request of and with permission from property owners or managers," the agency said."

A few things that need clearing up -- first off, is the above even true to begin with. Second, who requested/permitted that this particular m44 be set up. Third, where was the boy that he might come in contact with the thing (ie was he trespassing). Finally, regardless of whether it was duly requested by a private citizen and of whether the kid was trespassing -- who the HELL ever decided it was a good idea to leave cyanide spouts laying around?

It was placed there at the request of private owners.

Perhaps the best way to deal with this is to educate the people of the area, especially the children, to its dangers.

People have been killed by predator bombs. There is a long list of non target animals at the link.

Booby traps are illegal precisely because they might hurt an innocent person. But I guess that reasoning doesn’t hold if it’s the government setting the traps... *SPIT!*

Nielsen said he intended to meet federal officials next week to “get to the bottom of this.”

WHY?? Just issue Arrest Warrants and PROSECUTE the Agents involved and their boss that gave the Order. That is YOUR JOB!!!!

There was a time when a hunter would have picked up some bounty money for bringing in culls.

Was this cyanide bomb an attempt at cutting costs? Who approved the deployment of devices such as this?

I pray the lad is going to fully recover.

Reminds me of a chapter in a Neil Stephenson book “Diamond Age”, where everyone carries nano machines in their bloodstream. In one scene, a character is convicted of a crime, a judge pushes a button, and the nano machines slice the person to smitherines.

From your link:

"Initially, we were just trying to determine what it even was — that was our biggest concern" said Capt. Dan Argyle, who responded to the call at about 1 p.m. Thursday. "We have never dealt with these before."

He said the device was on top of a ridge about 500 yards from the boy's home, which is in a foothills area with other homes outside Pocatello.

Argyle said the device was in a patchwork area of private and public land and is believed to have been placed on U.S. Bureau of Land Management land. Argyle said the area is frequented by hikers, bikers and ATV riders. He said the area also has some sheep grazing.

Not a good idea without a skull and crossbones sign, and even then some people will see that as a invite to explore further.
