This Monday or Tuesday sees the Ping Pong of the Bill for triggering Article 50 (the mechanism that allows the UK to withdraw from the EU), shuttling between the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Once done, Prime Minister Theresa May will be in a position to announce that the UK is giving notice of leaving to the EU and Brexit negotiations can officially begin. Political chater is indicating that she could give notice to leave as early as Wednesday the 15th. But what happens next? What will the Movers & Shakers be aiming for? Didn’t the House of Lords (unelected SOBs) pass some law or rule that whatever measures the PM takes to carry out Brexit must first get their approval?
Did I say SOBs?
No - because they can’t. The House of Lords can’t force an amendment on such legislation, they can only delay it. They tried to use this power to delay to get the Commons to agree to their amendments but the Commons has today voted to reject that idea.
Technically the Lords could now try and enforce the delay, but it’s expected they will accept defeat at this point.
I know very little about the situation in Eorope and the EU. Which direction will Holland, Germany and France go after their elections? Will they remain in the EU?
Any predictions?
To paraphrase George Washington, entangling alliances are the acme of stupidity.
