He is purely justifying his own experience as a youth. It is very common with those who were abused as children. Iirc he was ten and a target of Father Michael. He is no doubt repeating the manipulation he heard from his many abuser It is one of the reasons that those who were abused abuse He must get therapy (educated )

Something about that ducked head of his, almost cowering, makes me not want to know the heartbreak he has experienced.
