I spent a summer there in my late teens, my dad’s company had bought a plant in Kingston, and they sent him down to get it switched over and productive. The former owner was quite friendly, Harvard educated black man, he had a beautiful walled compound filled with fruit trees that he allowed us to use while there, maid, cook and everything. I enjoyed my time there, this was late 70’s. But, it is a remarkably filthy country, they actually do dump all their garbage and sewage into a ravine and wait for a storm to wash it into the harbor and then out to sea. Tourists are well-advised to stay within their walled resorts. Even then, there were areas from which tourists didn’t return, blundering up the wrong backroad into the mountains.
Yup that was in the 70’s for me too
