#11 Exactly. Instead of investing in equipment these “farmers” just relied on the good ole Tax payers to subsidize their cheap field labor. They pay cash or very low wages and the criminal invading hoards arrive to get “free stuff” from Daddy Government.

Fug em, if they can’t make a living off their product perhaps they are in the wrong business.

Americans would gladly pay an extra 25 cents a for a head of lettuce or cabbage versus feeding, housing, medicating and educating low skilled labor by the millions to enrich the “farmers”.

Anyone care to wager money on what nationality and skill level Nancy Pelosi hires to pick her grapes?

Herman, the farmer who bought three new almond sweepers, said Trump influenced him on top of California’s rising minimum wage and a new law giving farm laborers overtime rights that are equal to workers in other industries.

Once again we see that agriculture's business model and the "jobs Americans won't do" canard is based on slave labor. One instance of expanding "rights that are equal to workers in other industries" for the slaves wrecks it.

Government-mandated price freezes are right out of Atlas Shrugged. Come on. Let people see that lettuce does *not* go to five bucks a head and many of the arguments of the last forty years vanish.

No problem use prisoners who volunteer give them 1/2 a day of time served for every day they work they are doing nothing but setting on their ass and getting free food.

Did I say Mexicans? In the 1940s and 1950s, there were all sorts of migrants bringing in the crops in CA. I said migrant labor. Migrants came from all sorts of backgrounds.

The camps were horrid. I remember (as a teen)going out to the migrant camps outside of Fresno with gifts and food from my church. It was bitter cold (for CA)and mothers had tiny babies running about wearing nothing more than a diaper. But their “men” were off on a drunk somewhere spending all the pay, leaving their families with nothing to eat and nothing to keep warm. The people from my church helped as much as we could, but it was not nearly enough.

My uncle just got sick of it. I believe this was before the bracero program started which brought in Mexicans who replaced the poor whites, blacks, and gypsies who traveled with the crops.
