Cases of a rare birth defect, called Gastroschisis, are on the rise, leaving medical experts baffled. One Valley mom, whose son Jaxson, is suffering has been documenting his journey in a blog called Jaxsons Got Guts. She hopes to bring awareness to this disorder, along with the painful topic of pediatric organ donation

Katie is my daughter and Jaxson is my grandson...
many of you are already following along from a previous prayer request thread HERE I want to thank everybody for all the prayers and Jaxson's continued progress. I think my daughter was waivering in her faith after all the trials with Jaxson early on and my prayer request thread with the response from everybody and the total 180 change with huge progress he has made since has really strengthened her faith and showed her the power of prayer! Thank you all so much!

I would like to take this opportunity to ask all the Freepers who are not organ donors to think about becoming one. This goes for you and your whole family... An untimely tragedy like a car accident or numerous other things and your families loss could mean a whole new life for 1200 people according to Jaxson's nurse... It becomes a way to give the precious gift of life and bring healing to those left behind here on earth or for us to live on long after we go home to be with God, at least think about it is all I can ask.

To each their own I suppose, not sure exactly what you have read, I have been a donor since I turned 16 and got my drivers license 35 years ago... I live my life trying not to waste anything... why in the end waste perfectly good organs and feed them to the worms or incinerate them? I recently got paperwork to donate my body to science... but want to confirm any viable organs would still go anywhere they could be used first.

I know I’ll probably catch it for this but here goes: Until my family gets compensated for my organs I will not volunteer. The hospital, the doctors, nurses, etc all get paid for the procedure and their time. Why shouldn’t my family get paid as well?

I used to be an organ donor until I read more about how it actually works. Organs must be harvested from a live body-the moment death occurs an enzyme is released rendering the organs unusable. This is why loved ones are highly pressured by doctors to make the decision to donate when a person is on life support. However, there are numerous cases of patients recovering when families resisted pressure from docs who insisted there was no hope.

I can’t imagine what your daughter is going through with her precious son. Such a difficult time. A mother’s heart longs to do anything for her child.

That is very good information! I Did not know that, but it makes sense, I know you can watch the life go out of eyes at the time of death... it’s my personal belief I will go when it’s my time to go, no matter the circumstances so does not really change my mind on it though, I am ready whenever that occurs.
