Shot a friends pistol grip 12 gauge once, not enough control for me. I always laugh when I see people firing shotguns in movies, never any recoil, like they’re shooting a bb gun. Also, soon after purchasing my 1st 12 gauge I discovered the Remington limbsaver, for anyone using a shotgun, I would recommend trying one. Very cheap and can absorb up to 70% recoil.
Would be nice to know what load he was shooting a lot of difference in a lite target load and a 3 inch mag. load.

I’ve done it with light aluminum frame shotguns (legal length). The best way is ‘from the hip’. And also with two hands like one would do for an accurate pistol shot (I prefer the classic weaver stance over the isosceles stance ).
It is not fun but quite doable. I’ve also done it with lever action model 1887 and 1901 Winchester 10 gauge. Now that’s more painful.
Sitting at a bench zeroing in a deer shotgun with12 gauge slugs with the gun to the shoulder can be quite jarring as one needs to fire many powerful rounds to scope it in. BTW standing on two feet with the gun to the shoulder is much less punishing than shooting off a bench. In that case, for zeroing, a shooting stick, or the roof of a car is easier to use (in my state touching the vehicle with a loaded long gun is illegal )

It is likely the sawed off does not have a very good grip. It may be that he deliberately used two fingers to set off both barrels at once. That would reduce the grip and double the recoil.
