Yes... Back in the 70s they really loved to go after people who were religious. I even remember a youtube channel run by a psychiatrist in California say that when people are religious, what they mean is they are mentally disturbed.
In Australia and Italy, mystics and people who were religious were often branded with schizophrenia and locked away "for their own good." I even remember it happening to one Polish Nun who got locked away by the commies.
It still goes on in the EU and parts of Eastern Europe though not as much. Usually they're just forcibly drugged up.
It doesn’t mean that conventional psychology can’t be of use in any circumstance, but it means that it is easy for its practitioners to get really arrogant.
Psychologists really ought to understand spiritual issues well enough to refer to the appropriate subject matter experts when they appear. A true biologically mediated illusion will disappear with the administration of a neuroleptic. A spiritual experience will not.
