I’ve been living in SE Alaska for a few years now. On this island we have both blacks and Alaskan Coastal Brown Bears. “Brownies” are the same species as Grizzlies, but larger because of their diet, or so I’ve heard.
Local’s will tell you that either a .45-70 lever action rifle or 12ga slug gun are the best choices for bear defense and that you absolutely need to carry something while hiking the trails outside of town. Nevertheless, a lot of people carry big revolvers as a matter of convenience, and I have heard of bears being dispatched with lesser calibers, even 9mm.
Here you go. Video shot from my boat on Baranof Island a couple of seasons ago.
I forgot to mention that in the little village in the video, Port Armstrong, we noticed that no one ever got more than arms reach from a 12 gage pump.
Just wanted to share Beau's 534# Black Bear that he got a few weeks ago in northern Wisconsin. He uses some sort of hand 'canon' that I can't even LIFT! This is his 3rd Black Bear in 30 years; this one is in the middle, one bigger, one smaller.
Ping to Post #44.
Very cool!
Thanks
Yep. Hand cannons work when properly used. Nice bear.
Great picture, happy dogs. Will take awhile to eat him
Bill Frady mentioned this on his Lock And Load radio show a few days ago.
I was all giddy that Bill mentioned FR.
Yes, it will; but bear is yummy and I have a lot of recipes to try. He’s still in chunks in a friends freezer. Beau is trying to decide which mount he wants. *I* want a full, standing mount; it would look so COOL in the entrance to our Family Room. :)
He’s off to WY right now, hunting Elk. He told me to look for wall space, as he’s planning on coming home with, ‘The Biggest Rack Ever’ and will need a 6’x6’ space to display it.
We shall see. He’s an amazing hunter. I’ll never go hungry, that’s for sure...and he’s going to be the perfect Team Leader for the coming Zombie Apocalypse; my very own, ‘Daryl Dixon!’ ;)
Did he mention this article?
He mentioned both the article, and FR.
His show is pretty awesome.
