I think the military went to the 9mm round because that’s what NATO uses. It’s easier logistically if you only have a couple of different ammunition types.

Very true, Japan during WW2 had so many different calibers that logistically it was a nightmare for them.

I keep a good set of ear muffs by the bed, ones which amplify sounds below my hearing level but block any sound above comfy decibels. IF a fool or fools break into my house, those ear muffs go on even before I rack the slide ...

147 grain 9mm is subsonic in barrels shorter than ten inches. You can buy an adapter to screw on a oil filter to suppress the sound to a pop. Youtube has Hickok 45 demonstrating it ...
