Ross Perot got nearly a fifth of the national vote in 1992.

Somehow I don't see Gary Johnson doing that. In fact, I would bet he doesn't crack 3%, as I simply cannot see Johnson beating Ralph Nader's 2.7% in the 2000 election.

Perot played the role in ‘92 that Trump is playing this year.

With the exception of MJ legalization, Johnson is pretty close ideologically to Romney, McCain, and GWB. Trump is a rejection of their brand of “conservatism”.

If Perot had somehow gotten the GOP nomination in ‘92, there would have been a third party rump GOP candidate run as a spoiler. There would have been a #NeverPerot movement and a concerted effort to tar him as a bigot, racist, fascist, etc. He was never a serious threat to anyone but GHWB, so such an effort was unnecessary.
