Reflecting governmental views, almost universally the media not only the established mastheads but even think-tank journals are aghast at the thought of a Trump victory. This is true not only in the US but here in Australia.
Those, like P.J. ORourke, who were mortified by Hillarys dishonesty, appalling lapses in security, and aggressive pursuit of failed Obama energy and health-care policies still favoured her over Trump. The reasons were cited as being Trumps assertive offensiveness to opponents (including to my favourite candidate, Ted Cruz) and
◾protectionist statements (though Hillarys criticism of free trade are not much different)
◾forthright opposition to Islamic immigration
◾statements about building a wall to prevent illegal immigration from Mexico (though this may be little different from the electronic surveillance that already covers most of the border)
An option to Trump was offered by the candidacy of a so-called Libertarian candidate, Gary Johnson. But several interviews have now discredited Johnson even for a protest vote. These included
◾one where he petulantly head-butted an interviewer for politically incorrectly calling illegal immigrants illegal immigrants and supported amnesties for illegals;
◾his apparent ignorance of the existence of Aleppo and
◾his embrace then rejection, post-focus group analysis, of a carbon tax.
When Hilary had a near double digit lead the media was able to smugly analyse Trumps appeal as pandering to the rednecks and ill-educated people unlike the sophisticates who are doing the writing.
The AFRs man in Washington, John Kehoe, declared the Trump campaign was on the cusp of implosion in August. As the polls narrowed, media outlets consoled their readers that the battleground states were all in Hillarys pocket and the crude numbers did not matter much. The AFRs stance in September was modified to nervousness by the Democrats but confidence as the swing states including Florida, Ohio, Nevada and North Carolina were all solid for Clinton . By last weekend Trump was ahead in Florida and Ohio with North Carolina and Nevada tied.
Since then the floodgates have opened on Trumps edging away at Hillarys lead.
Hilarys reticence about debating Trump, even about holding a press conference, is now more correctly seen as sound tactics. She and her advisers were long aware that the discipline she once had has evaporated and she was vulnerable even to a gentle quizzing by her media supporters. She was not even able to rouse up the LBGTI lobby by alleging that half of Trumps supporters are racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic you name it. And although Hillarys team quickly tried damage control, many of her media supporters concurred with her depiction. The Atlantics Te Nehisi Coates, for example, argued data is on her side, nearly 60 percent of Trumps supporters hold unfavorable views of Islam, and 76 percent support a ban on Muslims entering the United States. We know that some 40 percent of Trumps supporters believe blacks are more violent, more criminal, lazier, and ruder than whites.
Now Hillarys health problems are visible to everyone on YouTube and the election is Trumps to lose.
This will bring about a tidal shift in world politics. In foreign affairs that means much greater measures to confront the modern axis of evil from Sunni jihadists, to Iran and North Korea
It is unlikely that a Trump administration will wind back world free trade but, as with previous administrations interfaces with Japan, there will be considerably more pressure on China to open its own economy.
Energy policy will see a major change with the coal seam/shale oil and gas production no longer constrained and the renewable energy subsidies eliminated. No matter whether or not Obama manages to stampede enough countries into signing on to the Paris climate change agreement it will be dead soon after Trumps inauguration.
Hopefully, Trump will dramatically reduce the world leader conferences that, when they are not engaged in empty pontification, provide the sort of solutions that have brought the undermining of the western worlds productive capacities by fiscal and monetary stimulus to consumption.
In any event, governments here and in the rest of the world will, it is hoped, be preparing for the policy responses that will be necessary. At least Turnbull has avoided the baggage Shorten myopically took on board when he described Trump as barking mad.
She gave a long acceptance speech two months ago, now she can’t stand up. Does PD progress this fast?
Heart disease can.
“Are Governments preparing for a Trump Presidency?”
If they are half way smart...the better be.
Some are going to try and get as much as they can now before he comes in...but he will not forget it.
Whatever is going on with her, a campaign takes a lot of energy and stamina. That could certainly exacerbate a preexisting condition.
Very true. Although I never trust timing that’s too perfect, and this seems dang near perfect.
Wow! Supporting Hillary just because Trump doesn't take any crap from anyone and is indelicate in his delivery. Just wow!

She rested for days before the DNC. But then she had to overdo it as Trump closed the gap. Remember "aspiration pneumonia" is the #1 killer of those with PD..and it is aggravated by PD medication and the coumadin she takes to ward off strokes. The more active she is, the more people she interacts with and must control her symptoms with medication, the more she will get fluid in her lungs, cough, choke, become dizzy and exhaust herself. She is not fit to do this, let alone be president. She should not be in this race. She should be resting as MJ Fox did and does.
