I also add the argument that without the press, Nixon would have never been forced to step down. Us oldtimers know that to be the case as well.

I’ve used similar arguments with NeverTrumpers and Left-leaners that I know. That shuts them down in their tracks. The only comeback is “can’t we do better than this?”, which is their way of saying they lost the argument.
