Aussie surf lifesavers could soon have a new tool in their arsenal to rescue struggling swimmers – high-tech drones.
A new drone has been trialled in Spain which can save drowning bathers in less than a minute.

Now that’s a truly great idea.
Hope they make it with “heavy lift” capabilities. In case I ever need a rescue.

Great idea! Would be good if it got a little lower and closer to the person before dropping the life saver. Many people in the process of drowning don’t have the strength or ability to swim even a few feet.
Another improvement would be to have it hover above the beach area at all times. Linked to a video watched by the lifeguard, it could help the lifeguard identify swimmers at risk, and make it easier for him to pilot the drone to the victim.
It may even be possible for the drone/video station to monitor all the swimmers in the area and identify swimmers beginning to drown. There are certain behaviors they typically exhibit.
If the person were really drowning, could they swim to the float?
And it doesn't really want to.
I wonder if it can stand up to rip tides.
Next up is a drone for snow skiers.
It hovers over the downed skier, then
drops a St Bernard.

They are using drones in California’s wine counties to dust grape vines with sulphur.
Many wineries have properties all over the county they are in and surrounding counties.
Knowing when to pick the grapes being helped by using computers connected to remote weather stations throughout each vineyard in their wine properties.
This still requires a walk through by the winemakers and vineyard managers. Drones with hi def video cams can help to identify when the grapes are ready, in particular some of the red varieties. Sometimes the reds are planted on steep hills that make random walk throughs not that easy.
Another problem happens when part of the grapes in the same vineyard are ready before others in the same vineyard. Drone videos can help to identify the areas ready for harvest.
Some vineyards are using motorized dirt bikes to get the wine makers out to cover a lot of ground versus walking to see what grapes are ready.
Many winemakers prefer to have the grapes picked at night. The Drones, motorbike ride throughs, and the remote weather stations can be helpful/useful tools to help the winemakers make the decision re when and where to pick the grapes.
Fine for somebody caught in a riptide. I have seen a guy in the process of drowning before. He couldn’t swim that far.

A few months ago I read that the forest rangers wanted to use drones to search for lost hikers but were having problems with getting clearance from the FAA.
Haven’t read anything since, but it seems clearance at those low altitudes would be a no-brainer.
For some Freeper readers, you will see a similarity in the rescue technique mentioned in the article with a long post I wrote about 3 months ago on the potential capabilities of drones to send supplies (ropes, first aid items, radios, etc) to stranded and injured hikers/climbers; to take medical supplies into other distance areas in a short period of time; and eventually to airlift injured/sick people out of hard to reach areas.
The same applies to dropping fire-fighting equipment, rescue buoys/supplies for water disasters/emergencies, and even drop food, etc. to those in need.
The military applications of drones is immense.
The same for scientific projects including topography measurements and photography; tracing tsunamis; watching volcanoes, potential mudslide and avalanche areas, etc.
All you need is a little imagination and you can think of hundreds of uses of drones to help people.
Just heard a public service notice about donating blood. Well, a drone can deliver blood plasma and other medicines/equipment into remote areas far ahead (in time) of humans getting them. The same for use in floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.
Unleash your imagination, match it with present and future technology, and you will see a whole new world of use for drones.

#18: When dealing with the federal government, re “ it would be a no-brainer”, you forget that many government bureaucrats have no “brains”, “common sense”, or foresight.
Those of us who have brains, common sense and foresight are actually harassed and persecuted for trying to bring some order and intelligence to a stultified system.
The unofficial govt view by the upper bureaucrats is, “If it makes sense and works, we’re not interested”.
