We visited there while we were living in the KSA.
Generally speaking, it IS a dirty place but they are the THIRD WORLD and all the THIRD WORLD is comprised of dung holes, Christian, Muslim, Chinese, India...ALL OF'EM. I THINK that Japan is as clean as China is dirty, soiled, grimy, grubby, filthy, mucky, stained, unwashed, greasy, smeared, smeary, spotted, smudged, crummy, muddy, dusty, sooty...the WORST pit hole of a country in this entire planet.
I used to think that Mexico was a filthy dung hole. THEN we went to Saudi Arabia and I thought "Mexico is CLEAN" and Saudi Arabia is filthy.
Then we went to India and I thought "Saudi Arabia is clean." What a filthy place India was/is.
Then we went to north and east Africa and I thought "Somalia (and parts of Egypt) makes Saudi Arabia look spic and span."
Then we went to China and I thought "Somalia and Egypt are spanking clean and China WINS the award and the filthiest place on the entire face of this earth!" They still hold that, er "title" to this day.
Back to Turkey. We saw Ephesus. In its heyday it had been a PORT! The land had filled in all the bays and seas and the little stone house where Mary lived (and maybe died) was now far from the seashore, miles inland. It was amazing.
The Turks don't take care of anything but they DO allow Catholics to take care of the historic Christian places. It brings in tourist$ so that's why they allow it.
