My thing is....why does a vet really need a license?

If you had witnessed what this one Indian (hindi-type, not AmerInd) veterinarian did to a previous girlfriend's dog, you would be demanding not only stricter standards for the licence, but that all foreign-trained veterinarians be banned from any such work here in the U.S. -and of course that ban should extend to muzzie ones as well, considering their attitude towards certain animals.

By now, many FReepers have seen pics of my adorable rescue kitten Zizu. When I got her from a NJ rescue, you could legitimately say I RESCUED her from the rescue. This small rescue group doesn't have their own building, so they board their rescued cats and dogs at a nearby vet in a small town in central NJ. This guy is Caribbean trained. Although Zizu was in the "care" of this vet while being advertised on pet adoption websites, sitting in a big cage in the lobby of his clinic, he either did not notice or did not want to spend the money or time to treat her conjunctivitis, ear mites, or an obvious case of worms (she was only 4.2 lbs. at 8 months old and had her little hip bones jutting out and sparse, coarse fur). Before I left his clinic with my little treasure, I TOLD him, "She has conjunctivitis, ear mites, and very likely worms. I want them treated before I leave here!" He took her to an exam room and gave her meds to get rid of those things AND the first of her routine vaccinations. Why hadn't he given her that vaccination before I said I was coming in to adopt her? This guy had also been found guilty of negligence in the death of a dog by the NJ vet licensing board, and had been ripped in the local paper for his job as supervising vet of the local animal pound, which was described as a hell hole for animals.

The following Monday, I took her to a REAL vet, my own Cornell-trained vet. She agreed with my diagnoses and treated the conjunctivitis, sending me home with a week of drops, and testing to make sure the ear mites and worms were dead and gone. They were.

A month later, armed with a SPAY USA coupon for a substantial discount, I took Zizu to North Shore Animal League to get spayed. A Caribbean vet examined her as part of their pre-surgical workup. He declared that she had an upper molar that "needed to be pulled, $330 please). I told him there was no way he was pulling a permanent molar on a 9 month old kitten. I took her back to my vet to look at the tooth. She agreed, just said it might need to be scaled. And since then, another Cornell-trained vet looked at the tooth and said it was fine, too.

NO Caribbean trained vets for my pets!!
