"50's dances" happened when 70s kids who'd seen American Grafitti or Happy Days wanted to dress up like their parents had.
By the 80s high schoolers were having "60's dances," because that's when they'd been conceived.
So by now, kids should be having "90's dances," not going back 60 years to their grandparents' day.
Maybe the problem at Harvard is the students didn't have any real connection to the 1950s. All they know about it is what they read in a textbook.
