I suggest what is new is “they” are now also inside the government, in particular the “intelligence” apparatus (witness Comey for the latest Obamanation) and the Executive and the Congress. Those weren’t factors in the 60’s.
C’mon! Nixon carried 31 States and won over 300 EV. The pop vote was close but that doesn’t matter in our system.
