Germany beat Italy to reach Euro 2016 semi-finals after epic penalty shootout
theguardian.com ^ | July 3, 2016 | Daniel Taylor

Briefly, Germany toyed with our minds. For a few moments, they seemed to forget it was not supposed to be in their football DNA to miss from a penalty shootout even when the heat of the battle was dangerously close to intolerable. Yet how typical that, ultimately, it was their players in the victory scrum, chasing one another in euphoria and celebrating another victory from 12 yards. No other side does it better even if, on this occasion, they gave themselves an almighty scare.

They certainly tempted us to think they might have suffered a temporary loss of identity when Thomas Müller, Mesut Özil and Bastian Schweinsteiger failed to score with three of their opening five attempts in the high drama that eventually finished with Germany extending their remarkable run of reaching the semi-finals, at least, in every major tournament since Euro 2004.

Iceland has nothing to be ashamed about.

Full time: France 5-2 Iceland

Peep peep! For a meaningless second half, that was pretty enjoyable. France go through to meet Germany; Iceland have done themselves proud even in a 5-2 defeat. The XI who started all five games are already legends of Icelandic football. France will hope to achieve the same status in their own country in the next seven days.

Thanks to Iceland for making football fun in the last few weeks. And thanks to whichever higher power decreed that France will face Germany in the semi-final, because that will be an epic even before a ball is kicked.

Not bad for a nation of 330,000 people.

Soccer as well as hockey should be played out to the end no matter how long or how many periods it takes.............

I agree. Penalty kicks (shots) cheapens the sport.

As it turned out, France won the first half by enough margin that when they lost the second half it didn't eliminate them.

Someone said the French speed would give Iceland headaches. There was ample display of that in the first half. The French team are fast!

Wales, with Bale, have made this tournament fun to watch. Wednesday’s game between Wales and Portugal may be a really fun thing to behold.

Toni Schumacher must want to go into hiding every time Germany and France play in a major tournament.

The 86 semifinal was a good game too, though certainly not as memorable as 82.

I respect your opinion. In my opinion, the insistence that exhausted players finish their game cheapens the sport.

LOL!

You are the one saying Germany hasn’t won against Italy in 8 tournament games, you can’t make up something this idiotic. So, your view is a complete joke, you call games that are draws as wins for Italy.

Your statement on the surface is absurd, and you change it to your stupid opinion about how great Italy or Germany are.

And you don’t know what you are talking about if you are calling the views of German Universities baseless.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2013/aug/05/west-germany-doping-athletes-report

The reports are out there. That is a German University.

Spare me about your opinion of the World’s Premier Football Power; when you are making totally BS statements that show one knows nothing about football. Keep your abuse to your self please.

From someone calling Tournament game draws wins for Italy.

Their own university and government agency said they cheated, no matter how immaturely you abuse other people.

Is English your second language, don’t move the goalposts; you didn’t say anything about a playoff game. They just said “a game”, please spare me, the NHL has shoot outs and no one said one thing about playoffs.

http://proicehockey.about.com/od/rules/a/shootout_debate_2.htm

Don’t abuse me for saying something if you have no idea of what you are talking about. Yes, they have playoffs.

I’m not so idiotic as to call draws losses, so bug off with your abuse, no one asked you your opinions about Italy being kryptonite to Germany because Germany has lost 8 straight tournament games.

Germany’s own governmental agency came out and said their teams doped, in 1954 and 1966. Please don’t blame me if one is switching from a bold faced lie of saying Italy defeated Germany 8 straight games to bully others about how great Germany and Italy are.

Oh boy! Let’s hope we see much more of the German Team, they are so exciting.
