It was never going to be easy.
With 24 teams in the group stages at Euro 2016, that does not divide neatly into 16 qualifying for the knockout stages.
The best four third-placed teams from the six groups progress to the last 16.
So far, 12 teams have made it through: France, Switzerland, Wales, England, Slovakia, Germany, Poland, Spain, Croatia, Italy, Hungary and Northern Ireland.
BBC Sport helps explain which sides can still go through, why yellow cards could prove crucial and who is in pole position in the 'third-place table'.

Many teams, maybe about all of them would do something like this but it does set up an interesting pairing.
That drew France up, it did not win the game for them. Then, they went to the 2010 World Cup where curiously, I believe had one of the poorest records, perhaps North Korea was worse.
Good luck to all of the countries. A fine tournament. I hope the Croat contingent behave themselves. Buzzards, the team is on fire, and there own contrymen could undermine them.
Well if Ronaldo got off the schnide, then I hope Lewandowski can break out for Poland.
La main de dieu!
There's also a problem with being a one-man team; at least per someone who is often said to have been a one-man team, I think that Argentina was actually very good in addition to Maradona. The sportswriters like to puff him up too much.
Maradona: Portugal too dependent on Ronaldo
"Portugal are too dependent on Ronaldo," Maradona said in a column for the Times of India. "He was brilliant against Hungary, but they are half the force if he doesn't click and the tactically astute Croats will ensure he is low on supply.
"He may have to move around for space and chances of Portugal's success hinge on how well he does that.
"They also have to plug holes in midfield and defence, because these are areas where mistakes may lead to elimination. Croatia start favourites."
End of excerpt:
Portugal might have a chance but I don't see it. It would also knock out one of the most impressive teams in the tournament.
UK votes to leave EU; I don’t know all the details. We have the England vs. Iceland game coming up. Iceland is not a member. But if England should meet one of the EU countries, Germany or France, I think it might add some extra-tension to the match and tension I don’t think the 3 Lions would easily overcome.
But that’s political and perhaps I’m wrong.
I am glad the “leave” folks won but I’m not sure of the total effect per the different UK countries, Wales, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland.
