Like many Americans who were adults in the mid-1970s I was curious to see what the re-make of Roots would look like.
I found that the problems with the project actually appeared during an hour long discussion among historians. In the whole hour the word Democrat was not heard and the single reference to a political party was that the Republicans did not do enough to help the slaves. As a student of the history of that era I bristled at such textbook knee jerk liberal pap. Here is my response.
Save for the 1960s, and the last seven years, the behavior of the Democrats was never worse than during the Civil War. Democrats worked as hard as they could to defeat our troops on the battlefields and in the halls of Congress. As always, their purpose was to keep Black Americans in actual bondage, where they would be today if it were not for the heroics of the Republicans.
On April 16, 1862 Lincoln signed a bill ending slavery in the District of Columbia. The bill passed with 99% of Republicans voting Yes and 83% of Democrats voting No.
On July 2, 1862 a Republican Congressman from Vermont got the Land Grant Act passed. This bill established colleges that were open to African Americans for the first time ever.
Later that month on July 17, the Republican Congress passed the Confiscation Act freeing all slaves...

Yup. Mrs. rktman made a post on her facebook page about the democratically founded kkk. WOW! Talk about slamma jamma attacks. People we’ve never heard of were not very tolerant of her simple comment. Talk about thin skinned and in denial. I think she learned a lesson on that one.
Fetid swamp. I would not walk my two year old grandson past FB no matter how tightly I gripped his hand!
I won’t do it but she likes to keep up with her friends. LOL! I warned her she was doing a dangerous thing.

Heroics my ass. The coach is full of crap on this one.
The issue is far more complex than just slavery. The war did not have to happen. The rest of the western world did away with slavery without having a war. Compensated emancipation was a viable option at the time. However, ignoring the constitution and imposing policy with military force allowed Lincoln to solidify central federal authority over that of sovereign states.
You are correct, the war did not have to happen. But firing on a Federal Fort and issuing Letters of Marque against U.S. flagged merchant ships are acts of war authorized by Jefferson Davis.
