Maybe it was based upon a 10 point GPA system. LOL.
Really, AP courses in some school districts get 5.0 credit for an A.
Now lets talk seriously about grades. They are all inflated and mean nothing. They are a wet pile of dog poop.
My high school graded on a straight numeric system. Thank you. No extra credits, no field trips for credit. Just course work. Second honors were 2-90’s and 4-80’s. High honors were all 90’s. So much easier and right on. No 4.5’s in my high school.

She graduated from Crockett High School which uses a weighted average GPA, and therefore GPA's above 4.0 are possible. However with the low overall proficiencies of the school, this may not have been as great an achievement as it sounds.
